- Indian River Shores Public Safety Department’s Emergency Medical Services provides for 24/7 coverage within Indian River Shores by utilizing a highly trained and professional team of 6 emergency medical technicians and 23 paramedics. The ambulances are both Braun Super Chief, 2007 and 2012 models, which is the premiere ambulance in the industry. The Braun Super Chief is larger and more convenient than any other ambulance on the market today. Both ambulances are built to Public Safety standards, and have communications systems which link the vehicle directly to Indian River Medical Center. The ambulances also have air conditioning systems specifically designed for operating in the tropics.

All Public Safety Officers are certified as paramedics or EMTs and as police officers. As law enforcement officers are always on the road, they are typically the first to arrive at the scene of a medical emergency. In 2016, there were 472 calls for medical assistance and an average response time of less than five minutes to each. At the Department, it is required for two paramedics to respond on ambulance calls and these ambulances carry a full compliment of cardiac life support medications, intravenous fluids, oxygen therapy, trauma kits, oral intubations, and other critical lifesaving items.

Most importantly, 911 saves lives. If a medical emergency occurs dial 911 immediately. Do not call Public Safety or travel to the Public Safety Building. This action wastes valuable time and could have serious consequences. Time during a medical emergency can be the patient’s worst enemy or greatest benefit and early intervention pre-hospital care can save lives.
